A study conducted and prepared by The National Group for Arab Youth- Office of Research and Study
Free Syria for All Syrians
A general background about villages of Al-Hasaka Province Villages of Al-Hasaka Province are different from villages of other Syrian Provinces because they are classified under the category of small and median villages because most of these villages were founded recently after the decision of farming in 1959 in order to offer a place of the new owners of lands where the number of each small village does not exceed 500 people , but the villages, which were already founded before that time , have developed to be classified under the category of median villages where the number of each village ranges between 1500 and 2000 people .
Also, the cities of Al-Hasaka Province have been founded recently . The biggest city , Al-Qamishli , was founded in 1925 whereas the establishment of Al-Malkia as the second biggest city was done much time after that period-1925.Therefore, the countryside is the original hometown for all people of Al-Hasaka Province and people of Al-Jazeera in general .As a result , the number of villages is a significant indication of the percentage of the people of this region and their geographically and demographically racial distribution.
First: The Purpose of the Study :
Since the first weeks of the Syrian Revolution , the Cities of the Syrian Jazeera joined the revolutionary acts in the form of demonstrations in Al-Qamishli and Amoda. Then in the following period , all the cities of Al Hasaka Province joined the revolutionary acts . The Kurds who were organized under national parties and committees forming the biggest percentage who joined the Syrian Revolution at its beginning and exploiting this to claim cultural and national rights of the Kurds . at The first stage of the Syrian Revolution , Al Hasaka Province has got the attention of the media which focused on the demonstration of the Province.
Because the percentage of the Kurds who joined the demonstration at the beginning of the Syrian Revolution was bigger than the percentage of the Arabs ,
The region – Al-Hasaka Province- seemed as if it were with a majority of Kurds.
This was made clear because there were a lot of national flags-national Kurdish flags-used by the demonstrators. As a result , the TV Channels in their response to these demonstrations always
repeated that these regions are of Kurdish majorities. Then in another stage , the TV channels named these areas ” the Kurdish Regions”.
The Kurdish Politicians have exploited the opportunity in an imaginative way and far away from truth where they used specific numbers for the percentages of Kurds
living in Al-Hasaka Province to justify their request for federalism and self determination. With respect to this aspect, Abulhakeem Basshar , the Secretary of the Democratic
Kurdistani Party , the oldest party of the Kurds in Syria, said that the percentageof the Kurds in Al-Hasaka Province is above 75% . Also, Saleh Muslim , the chief
of the Democratic United Party – the Syrian version of PPK Party – mentioned that the percentage of the Kurds is 70% in Al-Hasaka Province. Due to these exaggerations which are far away from the truth and because of fear of threatening to the unity of Syria , it was a necessity to get a serious work and study to refute the lies through the media and demonstrate the truth. Because conducting an exact census of the residents of Al Hasaka Province requires a governmental committee for census and because the main cities in Al Hasaka Province are new ones where al-Qamishli and Al-Hasaka , the biggest cities of the Province , have been established in 1925 and all the residents of Al-Hasaka Province cities belong to the countryside , the targeting of the countryside in a census to demonstrate the demographic distribution of the countryside dwellers on a racial basis was the exact and closest census to the true percentages of the number of people in Al-Hasaka Province.
Second: The Research Method :
The source of the map :
-The main map which demonstrates all the villages of Al-Hasaka Province is part of Al Naddaf maps as it is made clear on the left, at the top of the map and it is the widespread map existing in the Syrian librariesbookshops- and officially accredited and registered in the Ministry of the Syrian Media under the number 109340 as it is explained in the map.
– Hundreds of people were asked to assist in this census study who belong to all areas of Al Hasaka Province and these people in their majorities are physicians, engineers, graduates of universities ,Shekhs and Mokhtars who are well known of their honesty and knowledge to provide the necessary information.
– To get the target information we specificated a certain area and specific people will be asked ,who will be appointed by the main team and it will be taken into consideration that the appointed people who will be asked are residents of the region under study. Also , it will be taken into consideration the diversity of the people who will be appointed to give information regarding their occupations , their qualifications , their races in the regions of multi-races
– After getting the required information , it will be filled in tables including the villages of the area under census study and the people who identified the racial reality of these villages as it is illustrated in the following table.
The results of the census study often result in the similarities of the ten opinions of the interviewed people about the majority of the villages to be Kurdish or Arabic. Then , these villages are mentioned on the map by using the red sign , the blue sign or the mixed sign which in their turns refer to the racial distribution of the dwellers of each village.
If one person out of the ten interviewed people has a different opinion , he will be met again in order to make sure of the provided information. If he changes his opinions after being asked to get the similarity of the information provided by the ten interviewed people and this accordance will assure the racial belonging , then the information is validated and transferred to the map. However, if one of the interviewed people insists on his opinion and insists on the information he has provided , other people will be asked and the attempt of asking a person who belongs to the same village to validate the information and fill it in the table.
If the similarity of the provided information was 8 out of 10 , the two people with different opinions and different information will be dealt with in the same previous way.
If the accordance of the provided information and opinions was less than 8 out of 10 people , an attempt to meet people who belong to the same village and consulting people not less than half of the first ten interviewed people and in this case , the provided information will be validated when it get the accordance of 11 people out of 15 people . It is worth mentioning that the people who do not belong to the same village are the source of different information and opinions.

Fourth : the beginning of the census study and the time of ending:
The beginning was in 3/2/2012
The ending time was in 12/6/2012
It was resumed to develop the census study in 18/11/2012 and it was complete in 9/1/2013
Fifth : completing the census study through the addition of specific census study of the cities .
Unfortunately , a lot of Districts of the cities in Al-Hasaka Province are based on racial distribution where it is possible , and through this stage by depending on the photos and maps supported by the satellites , to classify the Districts according to their racial distribution in order to complete the census study and to identify the demographic percentage of the Kurds in each city.
And in the same way , we will get photos to classify the Arabic Districts, the Kurdish Districts and the mixed ones and try to calculate approximately the percentages. As a result , the percentage of the error will be 10 % and it seems a reasonable percentage for us . We will start with the big cities .
Districts of a majority of Arabs of Al-Qamishli as it is illustrated in the map(1) and indicated by the red sign are Tai District , Alaia District, AlZuhoor District , Zunood District, Kaddor Bek District.
Also , Districts of the KeldoAshorian and the Armenian Districts were added and indicated by the red sign and these Districts are : Al Hamam Street , AlArbawea District , the Ashorain District, Al-Thawra District , and Al-Wusta District completely
